ICB Economic Update - Summer 2019

As a business bank, we know how important it is to keep current on economic conditions in your region and the state, but sometimes only national data is readily available. That’s why we bring you the ICB Economic Update newsletter. This quarterly newsletter gives you the latest information on employment growth, unemployment, job openings volume, housing starts and more. We hope this publication helps you get a clearer picture of what’s happening, both at the state level and in your own backyard.

Newsletter Highlights
The past week has intensified growing recession concerns with both fiscal and monetary indicators pointing to a slowdown. A few of these same indicators are already apparent in the economic performance of Central and Northeast Wisconsin in the 2nd Quarter. Firms across the region continue to expand at a cautious pace though trade pressures and a tight labor market present challenges. This has introduced significant uncertainty into the market, demanding that business leaders have access to timely information and strategic advice.

Below are some additional highlights from the summer 2019 edition of the ICB Economic Update Newsletter:

  • Economic growth in Central and Northeast Wisconsin slowed in Q2 2019 as growing concerns regarding tariff increases and other trade uncertainties collided with ongoing concerns regarding labor availability.
  • Local unemployment rates and job openings have both ticked upwards as fewer job seekers seek opportunities. Wage growth has also moderated as a consequence.
  • New housing starts remain well below recent rates both as a consequence of rising materials costs and decreasing demand.
